For some reason, the release of New Eternia Mosquitor was a bit delayed in the UK. At least it was for me and where I bought it from. No fear though, the evil energy draining member of the Evil Horde turned up this week. So let’s have a quick look at him.

Mosquitor!

This Mosquitor figure is from Masterverse Wave 19 which also includes Mantenna and Anti-Eternia He-Man. I’ve already looked at those two and with this wave now complete, it’s interesting to note that there were no good guys. It was an all evil affair with two of the figures being members of the Evil Horde.

A quick look at the box shows that Mosquitor’s long nose is squeezed in by turning his head to one side. This almost makes him look a bit coy, which is kind of cute. If an evil energy draining cybernetic mosquito can be cute!

Taking the figure out of the packaging, I spotted that the gun has been warped a bit. A little bit worried about how this figure had been packaged, I immediately flipped it over to check out the wings. I’d seen some online comments about these being fragile but they look okay, tucked into specially moulded spaces on the back of the packaging. Phew!

Shooting Round Corners

A close up photo of Mosquitor's gun. It's moulded in a metallic silver and has a metallic purple painted on the bottom half. This view of the top of the gun shows that it has unfortunately been warped so that it bends to the left.
Perfect for shooting round corners!

Although the rest of this Mosquitor figure seems absolutely fine, the gun is rather warped. Fortunately it’s made from a fairly flexible plastic and I’m sure it can be straightened by warming it in hot water and bending it into shape. Or I could leave it as is. It’s perfect for shooting round corners!

Tall, Dark and… a Cybernetic Mosquito!

From looking at promo photos of Mosquitor, I’d noticed that the Mattel designers had opted to use the slimmer legs and torso. Bearing this in mind, I was expecting Mosquitor to scale a little shorter against other characters like He-Man and Mantenna.

However, down to the huge silver boots and that off the wall robotic mosquito head, Mosquitor actually stands quite tall.

If you add to that the wings, particularly if you spread them out, this is quite an imposing version of the character!

A photo of Mosquitor, standing straight and looking at the viewer. The figure is holding its gun in its right hand, pointing off camera and has spread its wings up and out behind it.
With the addition of the wings, this Mosquitor is quite a big figure.

Wings?

Yes, this version has, translucent pinkish wings. With the benefit of hindsight, adding wings to an insect-themed figure seems like a no brainer. However, I think this might be the first time that Mosquitor has been given wings.

They’re a really nice addition and can be moved up and down and swiveled in and out. The plastic used is translucent and has bony and veiny details moulded in.

The wings on the back of Mosquitor can be moved about, such as positioned down and to close to the back as in this photo. The wings are moulded in a translucent, pinkish plastic.
If room is tight on your shelf, the wings can be positioned down and close to the back of the figure.

Eyes of the Mosquitor!

A close up photo of Mosquitor's head. Resembling a robotic mosquito, with large eyes and a long proboscis. This head is moulded in a red plastic with details picked out in a silver paint. The large eyes are encased in a clear plastic.
The large eyes are encased in a clear plastic, giving them a more “life like” look!

For this version of Mosquitor, the New Eternia designers have wisely stuck fairly close to the original 1980s look for the head. One upgrade though are the eyes. They are encased in a clear plastic which really gives the appearance of them being alive. Quite spooky and effective.

No Action Feature, But…

Okay, let’s cut to the chase! Lot’s of long term MOTU fans might be hoping that this Mosquitor retains his original action feature. For anybody who doesn’t know, the 1980s version had a button on the figure’s back. If pressed, this “pumped” a blood-red liquid that was visible through a bat-shaped opening on the front of the chest.

A close up of the front of the chest armour. This has soem red plastic moulded to look like it is dripping blood.
The visible ribs are a macabre touch!

The Masterverse line isn’t known for keeping action features, particularly if they are likely to get in the way of the figure’s articulation. This Mosquitor is no different, there’s no action feature. Instead the front of the armour has a choice of two plates. One is a solid red while the other has red plastic moulded to make it look like dripping blood. Even better, visible under this is some silver plastic shaped almost like it’s a rib cage!

I really think this is a great nod to the original action feature.

A Choice of Noses?

As daft as it sounds, this figure comes with a choice of noses! Or rather, ends of the proboscis:

Worth It?

As with Mantenna and Anti-Eternia He-Man, this is the first time Mosquitor has appeared in the Masterverse line. So this figure is absolutely worth it!

Mosquitor is also quite a deep cut character who hasn’t had many versions made of him. There was an Origins version from a few years ago and way before that a Classics version. Both are long gone and I’d advise not missing out on this excellent Masterverse version!
