After all of my banging on about the new DC Finest line of books, I was actually quite slow in getting one of the first ones!
As the title suggests, I went for the first volume of Batman that has been released – Year One & Two. So let’s take a quick look at it:

To a completionist like me, filling out that chart with more volumes is like catnip!

Well, first impressions are that I’m really impressed with this volume of DC Finest. It’s quite a chunky volume and the paper quality is pretty good. It’s a bright white without being glossy.
Anybody who was thinking they were going to be DC’s answer to Marvel’s Epic Collections were correct – at least based on this volume.
Fingers crossed DC puts more out. Although I’ve got most of the Dark Knight Detective and Caped Crusader volumes, I’m seriously thinking of doing a “side grade” over to this new line.
The DC Finest line is also covering some Golden Age and Silver Age material and I really need to get more organised – and er, some money! – and buy them!
Any Cynics Out There?
It does look like DC is going wide but not very deep with this new DC Finest line doesn’t it? I wouldn’t blame anyone who feels they’re simply re-publishing the material previously put out in the Archives lines (RIP).
However, this particular volume collects Batman material that hasn’t been comprehensively re-published very much. This latter point is what’s got me excited about the line and it will hopefully be really interesting to see the it develop!
