What a catchy title for a book!
A few months ago, I finally managed to track a copy of this Masterwork down for a not crazy price. As this was the final gap in the older volumes of the Masterworks in my collection, I’d thought I’d briefly celebrate snagging it here!
In the UK at least, this volume seemed to be surprisingly hard to get. I’m not 100% sure why. Perhaps it was a lower print run, an important artist, writer or character making it a desirable volume. Whatever the reason, volumes one and two were relatively easy to find but not this volume.
The Masterworks Jungle Adventure line collects the various jungle-related titles published by 1950s Marvel precursor Atlas Comics. These include Jungle Action, Jungle Tales and Lorna, the Jungle Queen – as seen on the cover to this volume.
As this run of Masterworks was only three volumes, not everything in this genre has been collected but it looks like a pretty good sample of the titles Atlas published.
Have to say that I am almost completely new to the jungle genre apart from Timely’s 1940s version of Ka-Zar (pretty bad!) and Marvel’s later version of Ka-Zar (pretty good!) so it’s going to an interesting experience. I’m fully expecting to cringe at a lot of white saviour tropes!
It’s great to finally get it and close the gap in my collection though. I did pay a bit more than I liked for it but not crazily so. However, my book budget is a bit depleted now!
